“I started taking riding lessons at the age of 7 as an alternative to the ballet lessons my sister and I hated. Our parents agreed to our plan with the understanding that we would never own a horse. Ha! We also had to earn part of the cost of the weekly lesson by cleaning our bedrooms.
Our family was not a horsey one, and I was not particularly talented. I still am not talented, but I work hard at my hobby and at overcoming the anxiety I have acquired with age.
My favorite mounts over the years have been Thoroughbreds. Once you have acquired a bond with a Thoroughbred, it seems like the two of you can do anything together. The friendships I have had with Thoroughbreds have been the most meaningful relationships I have experienced, and that includes most relationships with humans! As a result, the right Thoroughbred is a perfect mount for an older, nervous rider like myself.
In addition to riding and caring for my own horses, I enjoy being part of the organizational group for various horse competitions (by which I mean a volunteer with lots of responsibilities). My proudest efforts have included being competition manager for the Radnor Hunt Three Day Event and my current participation in the Fair Hill Thoroughbred Show.
My mount for The Real Rider Cup is Star That Shines (Astrology-I’m Surprised), a 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred owned by my friend Kelly Conner. Kelly acquired him through race trainer Erin McClellan, who is the partner of Kelly’s brother. Star is a beautiful and talented horse that is just starting his show career. He will be a big success due to his innate ability and the wisdom Kelly brings to the care and training of her horses.”
