Messi (GER) | Caroline M. Young

Multiple graded stakes winner Messi (GER) was a solid barn favorite while under the care of trainer Graham Motion at Herringswell Stables in Fair Hill, Maryland. Racing in Germany for the first three seasons of his career, his first start in the United States was a winning effort at Belmont Park on July 7, 2015. He suffered a freakish injury when a clod of dirt hit him in the eye in the River City Handicap at Churchill Downs in November 2015, necessitating a six-month layoff. But he came back strong and continued to be competitive for another three years, numbering among his wins the Sky Classic Stakes-G2 at Woodbine. He made his final start in June 2018.

Upon his retirement, Messi (GER) moved to northwestern South Carolina and now lives a wonderful life as a foxhunter with Sue Haldeman, whipper-in with the Tryon Hounds.

Caroline M. Young

“My intent as an abstract painter is to share a sense of wonder, joy and hope. Color is a key component in this expression along with the interaction of shape, line and space. A dialogue takes place between inner and outer world, a conversation with spirit. My figurative work portrays those spirits that protect and guide us, those we cannot see, but whose presence we sense.

Painting is a process of exploration and discovery. It allows me to remain a student knowing that I cannot predict what will show up in the work. This quote by Michael Mew says it well: ‘The meaning of a piece often becomes apparent only in the end. It’s like finding a secret message that you unknowingly sent yourself.”
