Mary grew up in Middleburg, Virginia fox hunting and horse showing before discovering her love of racing through her family. She competed as an amateur steeplechase jockey before traveling to England, Australia, and New Zealand working for top trainers. She also spent time working for many top trainers in the US including her uncle, Graham Motion. Mary is now based in Kentucky working for Schumer Bloodstock.
