Sara is an equestrian jack-of-all trades who also has a habit of never leaving school. Her introduction to the world of Thoroughbred racing came when she started work as an exercise rider for Johnathan Sheppard while she was in college (the first time). Although she left that job to start another as a high school teacher, she has recently returned to racehorses as a rider for Ricky Hendriks (because, you guessed it, she’s back in school). Also, has been an outrider at many of the point-to-points and hunt meets in PA and MD.
Out of the saddle, Sara has earned a B.A. in Mathematics Education, a B.A. in History, and a M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership from the University of Delaware. Betwixt and between those degrees, she taught algebra, geometry, and calculus at Elkton High School. In 2017, she made the decision to return to school full-time to earn her Ph.D. in Education at University of Delaware. She will be starting her third year in the program this fall.
In the saddle, Sara has competed primarily in the sport of three-day eventing. She has ridden to the Advanced level and has completed the Fair Hill CCI. However, she enjoys other disciplines as well. During her junior years, she piloted an OTTB to many top placings in the USEF rated Junior Hunter division. Recently, she has returned to the hunter ring in the Ladies Side-Saddle where she won a class at Devon in 2017 and placed second in a class at Upperville in 2018. Side-saddle has also taken Sara overseas. During the summer of 2017, she travelled to the UK to compete in the National Side Saddle Show and came home with top placings in the Novice Equitation and the Novice Working Hunter. Last but not least, Sara also enjoys foxhunting and is an amateur whip for the River Hills Foxhounds.
Sponsored by steeplechase owners Rosbrian Farm and Ricky Hendriks, Sara will wear the Rosbrian colors. She is pictured above on her Real Rider Cup mount, Shining Won, with owner Julie Bigham.
