James Stierhoff

Maryland native James Stierhoff traded in his lacrosse stick for riding lessons as a boy, eventually spending three summers in Vermont as a working student for top three-day-event rider and trainer Denny Emerson. That experience paved the way to jobs with Bruce Fenwick and Jay Griswold, which in turn led to mounts in point-to-point races. In 2010 James was given the chance to ride in his first sanctioned race – the Maryland Hunt Cup – when trainer Billy Meister was injured the previous week at the Grand National. He and Lucy Goelet’s Twill Do, his mount in The Real Rider Cup, won the historic race that year and repeated the feat again in 2012, leading to a long partnership and deep kinship with the horse James calls “by far the best horse I’ll ever be associated with.”
