Bio
My name is Kristin Schlachter. I am a fourth-generation horseman, continuing a deep-rooted family tradition that began with my great-grandparents, who owned racehorses and fox hunted in Maryland from the 1930s through the 1960s. Their love for horsemanship was passed down through my mother and instilled in me from a very young age. I’ve been riding since I could walk—starting on the leadline—and horses have been a constant in my life ever since. My early years with ponies led me into the United States Pony Club, where I began developing the foundation of my riding. A chestnut off-track Thoroughbred mare was my first horse and the one who truly sparked my love of eventing. She helped me climb the Pony Club rating levels and ultimately earn my USPC “A” rating—thanks in large part to the off-track Thoroughbreds who taught me so much along the way. I’ve competed up to the Advanced and 3* level in eventing, producing horses from the ground up. A highlight of my competitive career includes earning a team silver medal with Area II at the North American Young Rider Championships. For the past 20 years, my focus has shifted toward Thoroughbred aftercare and rehoming. I take pride in transitioning OTTBs from racing into their second careers—approaching each horse as an individual, nurturing their strengths, and helping them build confidence for a successful future with their next person. You’ll often find me out eventing, fox hunting, or occasionally in the hunter ring— almost always on an OTTB. One of my favorite memories is competing at the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover on Red Doctober, where we placed in the fox hunting division and showcased a side-saddle freestyle. Beyond the saddle, I work closely with Pennsylvania-bred mares and foals—handling, shipping, and presenting them at the PA-bred Yearling Show. Whether retraining, competing, or caring for young stock, my life and career are shaped by a deep respect for the horse and a lifelong dedication to the Thoroughbred.
