My name is Bernie Smith, local Thoroughbred lover and equine vet. I just love this breed and feel very thankful to have TB’s in my life, as they have helped me become the person I am today :) Biscuit, race name Ascania, is my amazing OTTB that I adopted thru the CANTER program in 2016. I had lost my first OTTB Junbug during vet school 2 years prior and it took me a while to feel like I was ready to get another one. Biscuit had raced 39 times and retired sound! This sounds crazy especially as a vet but it was something about his eye, his persona that we knew he was right for our family. We brought him home in the middle of my internship at Rood & Riddle so our first year together was spent doing bareback rides in between emergencies and foalings. Then we moved the herd (Biscuit, his porky QH pal Jake and 2 mini donkeys) across the GW bridge into Long Island NY for 1 year for another internship at Cornell Ruffian (NY life for a horse was quite interesting!) before finally coming home to Maryland in 2018. Biscuit resides at out little farm in Fair Hill with his pasture mates Jake, the donkeys and Silver Cowboy, another wonderful OTTB that we took in 2018 from Aqueduct :)
